Anyone who knows me knows that I love Biffy, I've seen them countless times and am always wowed by their new songs. I still love and defend there much knocked puzzle album. So needless to say I had extremely high hopes for the new record.

Enter "that golden rule", Its a belter! I thought to myself "YEEEEEEEEEEESSSSS!!!! This album is gonna be epic"

Then I got the album....

I make no secret of the fact that The Captain shocked me. Something about it just seemed plain cheesy. Thats the first time I ever felt like perhaps Biffy had written a song purely because they thought it would do well in the charts. It hurt.

Bubbles however, cheered me up. Although there are some parts of it which fall on the dodgy side of the cheese line most of it is great.

God and Satan is not my favourate track. I'm not sure. It's an acoustic track with the same sort of format as "As Dust Dances" but it just feels less genuine somehow.

One of the songs that has grown on me is Born on a Horse. The line "I've never had a lover whose my sister or my brother, I was born on a horse that's all" is genius. The song sounds more like some of Marmaduke Dukes songs than biffy which is interesting but fun. Dirty funky.

Everyone knows mountains by now.

A song I'm loving is "Many of Horror", its a quiet song played on clean electric guitar and just feels genuine even if some of the lyrics sound clichéd.

Boooooom, Blast & Ruin I REALLY DONT LIKE. So much so that I tried listening to it a few times but now actually get up and skip the song every time now. The music sounds very American pop rock and the lyrics tread the dodgy line of sounding like they're trying to be deep but lack substance.

Cloud of Stink is very raw biffy. Fast, abrasive and featuring the lyrics "Fuck if you wanna fuck when you wanna cum" I like more the more I listen to it.

So over all there are a couple of amazing songs (that golden rule being my favourite and utterly magnificent) but some of the songs really disappoint. I'll respect any style they choose to pursue, but songs that seem forced really feel like a kick in the stomach.

I am liking this album more than I ever liked Biffy. I get what you mean about the captain being a bit cheesy though.
